How Thick Should The Concrete Pavement Be?

• Driveways – For typical residential driveways that will receive only light use with passenger vehicles, a 4″ reinforced slab is usually sufficient. For very wide driveways, or driveways where heavy recreational vehicles, trucks, or other equipment may use the driveway or be parked on it, a 6″ slab with more reinforcement may be needed. Your Richfield Concrete representative will ask you about how your driveway will be used and will make recommendations for you to consider.
• Parking and Storage Pads – Outdoor parking pads for recreational vehicles and boats are a popular addition to other parking at many homes. For these heavy vehicles, a 6″ thickness of concrete may be recommended. For light storage areas, a 4″ slab is usually sufficient.
• Sidewalks – Typically, sidewalks are 4″ thick. That’s more than adequate for any foot traffic.
• Patios – Like sidewalks, patios do not generally require concrete thicker than 4″, since traffic on them is light.
• Concrete for Special Uses – If your project isn’t typical, the thickness required for your concrete may be specified based on the loads it must carry. Each project requires its own design. We’ll be happy to work with you to determine what that design should be.
